My Mommy posted for the first time ever today! So exciting!<\/p>\n

She’s locked the entry, so I’m not sure how many of you will be allowed to read her posts, but the project is, she’s going to try to record her memories from childhood onwards in an attempt to build a sort of online autobiography, so that I and my future progeny get to see a little of her early history. <\/p>\n

She’s started in the nursery, so it looks like it will span from the early ‘forties onwards. An ambitious project.<\/p>\n

A lot of people might be weirded out by their parents keeping a blog. Hell, a lot of people might be weirded out by their parents *reading* their diary (or knowing about it *cough**cough*). But I think it’s an excellent way to preserve personal family history, and to capture a personality that would otherwise be lost in the eventuality of time. I only wish my father had time and capability to pursue the same recording of his stories, hilarious and unique as they are. <\/p>\n

Also, my mother always encouraged me to do adult things when I was younger – like, you know, start an RRSP at 16, get a mortgage at 18 – so I think it’s only fair that I encourage her to do youthful things as an adult. And keeping an online diary is youthful… and fun! The venting! The support network! The instantaneous feedback! The interblog gakking!<\/p>\n

Coincidentally, my Ministry supports these efforts as well. One of our program areas is participating in something called The Memory Project<\/a>, which records the reminiscinces of veterans and videotapes\/photographs their mementos from the World Wars, to keep on record for future schoolchildren to watch. They also send veterans on tours to visit schools, lecture and answer students’ questions in person.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
