What I learned in class

– I hate the Pen tool. Yet I clearly need the pen tool.
– Vectors are mathematical (icky) and I need them too (for logos).
– Why does making Bezier curves and moving points and paths have to be so confusing and non-intuitive?
– I need to read more about using the slice tool and making web layers in Fireworks, for exporting to Dreamweaver.
– I need to work on my Optimization skills.

* I think I’m going to be made webmistress of www.etobicokequiltersguild.com
which is good because that site needs some serious love and attention (it’s fugly at the moment), but bad because WHEN WILL I FIND THE TIME?!?!?! Also, the paid banner nonsense from netfirms just has to go, because it’s killing the site. And what is with the speckled tan background and criminal overuse of Comic Sans Serif? Awful. Just awful.

** I really need like a week off work to clean the house, garden, finish up loose quilting projects, etc. Maybe I’ll book more vacation?

  1. I ended up having a brief conversation about fonts with my coworkers yesterday (I know, this makes me the hugest geek in geekonia), which went a little something like this:

Chrissy: Palatino (our corporate font) is a nice font! It has a really nice ampersand, particularly in italic.
Kiran: Personally, I really like Century Gothic.
Chrissy: Really? I’m not a huge fan.
Trent: I did my resume in Century Gothic. I HATE Courier.
Chrissy: Comic Sans fills me with rage.
Everyone: awkward pause as we realize how lame our conversation is

*sigh* Sadly, I’ve had variations on that conversation with a LOT of people…

  2. Yeah, I was seriously considering that, *or* possibly spending $50 to buy eqg.ca for a year and then redirecting etobicokequiltersguild.com to that MUCH EASIER TO TYPE URL, and having them both hosted by Doteasy.

One thing that I’m not sure about is this: Doteasy says on the “transfer domain hosting” page that it is free life time [sic] hosting.

However! if I buy a domain through Doteasy for one year, then renew it with another company, can I keep on with my free hosting? I don’t mind shelling out the $50 for a .ca ONCE, but seriously, you can buy FIVE YEARS worth of .ca registration from namespro.ca for less than $70CDN tax included. So I won’t necessarily be renewing with Doteasy after year one. It’s a pickle.

  3. The hosting is only free if they’re your registrar.

You kind of have to consider it the cost of registering AND hosting with doteasy. I took a quick peek at their website and if you registered and then picked their cheapie hosting plan ($4.88/month) with namespro.ca, it would be $71.44 CDN/year. And you’re probably not going to find much cheaper. But definitely shop around.

  4. (note: their plan for $71.44 has a $15 set-up fee if you want to pay it monthly/bi-monthly… HOWEVER, it also offers more scripting options and storage space than Doteasy. But then, for the quilter’s guild, you may not need all that capability/space).

  5. Also? .ca is often more expensive than .com, because there’s a whole gov’t registration process your registrar has to go through to register a .ca URL (basically, they have to prove it’s being purchased by a Canadian), which also involves a second step in the registration process. Something to think about.

  6. i too would like to register my utter hatred for comic sans. who ever decided to make that a standard comes-with-microsoft-word font should be shot.

as for the pen tool, i think it takes practice. it still takes me a little refreshing every time i go to use it.

  7. Well, I would have gone for eqg.com, but some bastard has already registered it and simply parked on it without developing.

I hate it when people do that. Develop or die!
*hides her nonexistent sinensis.ca address in shame*

So eqg.ca was my only other option (before you ask: .net, .org & .info are all taken as well).

  8. We are all in agreement: Comic sans must die.

The best part of this story… check out the homepage/entire site of the web development *cough* company who undertook to create this masterpiece of what-not-to-do. So lame.

    Enjoy! http://www.COREdesign.ca

ps – Kurt, are you still in NYC? Should I try to meet you for coffee Sar or Sun?

  9. I *know*! It’s so painful. I can’t even.

Promise I will post my nice, tidy redesign as soon as I have it cobbled together (and permission from the Guild Executive to get rid of that gorram banner advertising!) It will get better, you’ll see!

  10. I strongly suspect the banner advertising is automatically placed by the web host they’re using, not a paid ad intentionally placed by the Guild.
