Gyminy Cricket

Busy weekend: I spent Friday night and Saturday morning with my Mum, working on various knitting projects. Saturday morning we spent some time with her friend Mae (who does my taxes – love her!) and then went to visit Dad. He was doing fine, alert, verbal, even fed himself some soup, but apparently I was not doing fine, since I got very emotional and started to get that bad lump-in-the-throat, teary-eyed feeling that precedes a good deep sobbing marathon. Mum suggested I wait for her in the lobby, which I did, but just barely got it together before she came to take me home.

The mood kind of stayed with me all afternoon, but I was looking forward to our friend Steph coming in from Guelph for an overnight stay, so I lightened up a little once Mum drove me back to Weston. Sadly, JVL had to miss one of his friend’s engagement parties downtown because he only found out about it that morning and we had already committed to entertaining Steph (which I was in no state to do by myself, being all sniffly and weepy from the visit with Dad). Aaron came by and we made peach crisp, watched some random television and then tried very unsuccessfully to teach Steph how to drive standard using Aaron’s poor Honda as a test drive. Ouch. His transmission may never be the same. It was a good night.

Sunday morning Steph, JVL and I made a full throttle bacon, egg, toast and fruit breakfast, then he and I went for a walk while she took a delightful bath. Then I cycled up to the shiny new GoodLife Fitness club and signed myself up for a year of exercise. Then back home and off to a Gaelic football game, where I was hungry and cold and didn’t comprehend the rules at all, and was very grateful when 7pm rolled around and it was time for ‘s birthday party at the Red Violin. I won’t go into the gory details of our carnivore-fest for those vegetarians who may be reading this, but let me say that if you’re not grooving the idea of sitting down and consuming more than ten different animals in one go, you should probably avoid Brazilian barbecue buffet. So! Much! Meat!

Monday night was eventful: JVL and I went to his Mum’s house to install her new DVD player and sound system. Had an unfortunate near-miss with Justin’s dad, which sent me into a quiet white fury for the rest of the night, as I played out endless scenarios in my head where I gave the man a piece of my mind. Had not realized before just how intensely angry I am at him for not ever calling me back the night I phoned him a million times from the hospital when Justin was sick and we needed help, for stiffing me with the San Diego hotel bill, and for just being a total dick to his son. Grrrr. Really wish we’d had some notice that he was coming by, just so we could have gone there on another night.

Last night Justin worked late so I knit a while, read a while, and then went on my first foray to the gym. Didn’t do a lot – used a treadmill for 30 minutes, 15 of which I ran at a decent pace. Will be going back tonight for some “Bodyflow”, which is supposed to be kind of like yogilates. Justin was super cranky while working on some photo assignment for work, because he’s new to Photoshop and hasn’t become fully proficient at it yet. He failed to give me a hug or respond in any supportive way when I told him some bad news about a friend’s health complications and then proceeded to speak rudely to me just before I went to bed, so there had better be some apology flowers and maybe some apology wine coming my way in the near future. Of course, I won’t see him tonight as he’s working a golf fundraiser, and tomorrow is a DLLC meeting with Chrissy & Melly, so we may not get this properly sorted out until Friday, which lo and behold is my high school reunion evening in my hometown. Our timing sucks. Guess I’ll just fume and hope for flowers until Friday.

Peace, y’all.

  1. *hugs*

I quite enjoy BodyFlow – I used to do it semi-regularly, and need to get back into it again.

  2. That is what I would call a pretty upsetting couple of days.

Hopefully we can at least distract you, if not cheer you up a bit, Thursday. And Friday should be lots of fun – we’ve got about 40 people coming, and a pretty good bunch at that.

  3. It would appear we timed our meeting well, at least kinda.

Go you for joining the gym. You’re very brave, at least in my books.

    *smooch*

  4. One thing that has been a pleasant distraction over the last few days has been your book – I started reading ‘The Secret Pearl’ at long last, and am now about 120 pages into it. I’m very intrigued to see how the author plans to get the main players out of their very difficult social situations, given the era that the book is written in. A married man of high social position and a murderess on the run who is terrified of him? Seems like a challenging combination to pair up, plot-wise.

I’ll let you know what I think when I’m done, but so far it has been a smooth read. Thanks for the loan!

  5. That is true… the DLLC is welcomed by me. Thank goodness for ladies. And wine. And cheese.

The problem with gym memberships for me is always more about mentally justifying the expense, and convincing myself that I’ll get my money’s worth and that it will be motivating so I can’t just say “oh I guess I’ll walk more or cycle more”. Actually going isn’t so bad. Once I’ve signed up, it’s quite a relief.

Plus, it’s really close to my house and I am all about convenience, AND it’s an all-ladies gym, so no pressure from having sweaty guys around all the time. I like it so far.

  6. Blar. Sucky week. You have my hugs, which are virtual for now and will be physical on Friday. Until then, you also have my sincerest hopes that your week improves.

    Much love!
